I recently came across the news website for the 2009 Shenzhen and Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture. The first work session meeting was held on February 16 2009 with Ou Ning appointed as chief curator. They are still trying to decide on the exhibition site, theme, content and execution proposals for the Biennale. Ou Ning is taking “City Mobilisation” as the curatorial point of departure, aimed at investigating the mode of operation and the organisation of social life in the context of contemporary urbanity.

Ou Ning has begun preliminary discussions with prominent architects and designers to discuss the visual design and possibilities of collaborating in the academic conferences for the Biennale. Designer duo Xiaomage + Chengzi were approached to discuss the visual design of the Biennale along with Zak Kyes.

I was very excited to learn that Hans Ulrich Obrist from the Serpentine Gallery in London was approached as I had been following his conversations with prominent architects such as Rem Koolhaas and Zaha Hadid. Not surprising was Ou Ning’s discussions with Koolhaas and Hadid to also take part in the Biennale.

No dates or venues have been announced yet but I’ll be sure to follow closely and post any updates as soon as I hear. It’ll likely be at the end of the year so I’m hoping I can visit the show!
